What level of wealth should Americans strive for to be wealthy—or just plain comfortable?
Going by Charles Schwab (GreenRock’s custodian partner) and its latest annual Modern Wealth survey of 2,000 adults, it takes $2.3M in personal net worth to be wealthy, down from $2.5 million a year ago.
Per the survey, it takes at least $839,000 in net worth to live comfortably in the U.S., which is up from $778,000 a year ago.
The participants who did the survey had a median of $75k investable assets and $68k in household income. They nationally represent the population ages 21-75.
Ultimately, wealth and comfort vary widely based on personal aspirations, location, and unique circumstances.
These were among the other key findings of the Schwab survey:
- Eight in 10 Americans feel wealthy when it comes to the quality of their relationships, their happiness and their free time.
- Gen Z sets lower thresholds for what it takes to be wealthy and financially comfortable, while boomers set the highest standards.
- A third of Americans think they are either on track or already wealthy.
- Younger Americans are more likely to think they are financially comfortable or on track to be. Boomers are the least likely.
